The 5-step estimating workflow (simple)
- Create a floor plan
- Draw rooms, walls, doors, windows, and fixtures to scale.
- Tag everything
- Add names, sizes, heights, materials, and room names to each item (floors, walls, trim, cabinets, lights, outlets, plumbing, doors/windows, demo items).
- Export as a sheet
- Export object data to a CSV or spreadsheet so every tagged item becomes a line you can price.
- Enter pricing
- Fill in unit costs you know (materials and/or labor) per sf, lf, or each.
- Calculate totals
- Use simple sheet formulas to sum by item, room, and project.
What to include in your sheet?
Columns: Room, Item, Spec/Tag, Unit (sf/lf/each), Quantity, Unit Cost, Labor Rate (optional), Subtotal, Notes.
Formulas:
- Subtotal = Quantity × (Unit Cost + Labor Rate)
- Room total = SUM of Subtotals per room
- Project total = SUM of all rooms
- Optional adds (still simple)
- Waste/overage factor: e.g., tile 10–15%, wood 5–10%, paint 10%.
- Tax, overhead and profit, contingency (10–20%).
- Regional labor adjustments and allowances (e.g., custom glass, stone).
